1. Two companies, one brand
Ralph Jacobs trades through two companies. Both are part of the same group and both stand behind the Ralph Jacobs name.
| Ralph Jacobs SA (Pty) Ltd | Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited | |

One of these two companies sells to you. Which one depends on where your order is delivered.
2. Which company you are buying from
| Where your order is delivered | The company you contract with |
|---|---|
| South Africa | Ralph Jacobs SA (Pty) Ltd |
| Every other country — including New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands, the rest of Africa, Europe, the United Kingdom, the Americas, Asia and the Middle East | Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited |
So if your order is delivered anywhere in South Africa, you are buying from Ralph Jacobs SA (Pty) Ltd. If it is delivered to Auckland, Brisbane, Harare, London or anywhere else outside South Africa, you are buying from Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited.
2.1 The website you use does not decide it — your delivery address does
We run several websites. ralphjacobs.co.za is our South African storefront. ralphjacobs.co.nz (New Zealand and Australia) and ralphjacobs.co (customers everywhere else) are run by Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited. ralphjacobs.org is this legal hub.
Whichever site you arrive on, the company that sells to you is set by the table in section 2. The sites route you to the right company. If you are in New Zealand and you land on a South African storefront, your order is still with Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited.
We do this so that the company you contract with always matches the tax and consumer law that applies where you live. It would not be right to put a New Zealand customer into a South African contract because of the link they happened to click.
2.2 You are told before you pay
The checkout names the company you are contracting with, its registration number and its address, before you pay. So do your order confirmation and your invoice.
If the site has routed you somewhere that looks wrong, stop and contact us before paying. We do not change the selling company after payment.
3. Where we ship
Both companies ship internationally within their markets.
We cannot ship where sanctions, export controls, our couriers or our payment providers prevent it, and some items cannot be sent where the destination restricts the import of precious metals or stones. Some destinations need extra identity checks before a high-value piece is released.
If we cannot ship to you, we tell you before taking payment. If we discover it afterwards, we refund you in full.
4. Tax and duty
For transactions with Ralph Jacobs SA (Pty) Ltd — deliveries within South Africa
Your price includes South African VAT at the standard rate. Nothing further is payable on delivery.
For transactions with Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited — deliveries everywhere else
Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited is not currently registered for New Zealand GST, because its turnover is below the NZD 60,000 registration threshold. This means:
- no New Zealand GST is charged on your order and no GST is shown on your invoice; and
- if that changes, this page and our prices will say so before it affects any order.
| Delivered to | What you pay us | What you may pay on arrival |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | The price shown, with no GST added | Nothing further |
| Anywhere else | The price shown | Your own country’s import duty, import VAT or GST, clearance and broker fees. These are charged by your customs authority or courier, not by us |
Both companies
We cannot tell you in advance what your own country will charge you on import. Those amounts are set by your government, not by us, and the courier usually collects them before delivery. Where we can estimate them at checkout we will, and we label the estimate as an estimate.
If you refuse a delivery because of import charges, the cost of return and any charges already incurred come off your refund.
5. Your rights, by where you are
These apply in addition to our Terms and Conditions. Where your local law gives you a right you cannot be deprived of, that right applies whatever our terms say.
5.1 For transactions with Ralph Jacobs SA (Pty) Ltd — South Africa
Governed by South African law, including the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 and the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002.
- Quality. Goods must be of good quality, in working order and free of defects. You may return defective goods within six months for repair, replacement or refund — your choice.
- Online cancellation. Seven days to cancel an online purchase without reason, except for made-to-order and personalised items. See Company and Legal Information.
- Direct marketing. Five business days to cancel a purchase resulting from direct marketing.
- Complaints. To us first, then the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud free of charge, then the National Consumer Commission or a court.
- Privacy. POPIA. See our Privacy Notice.
5.2 For transactions with Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited — New Zealand
Governed by New Zealand law.
- Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. If you buy for personal use, you have guarantees that goods are of acceptable quality, fit for purpose and match their description. These cannot be contracted out of and nothing in our terms tries to.
- Fair Trading Act 1986. Protects you against misleading or deceptive conduct.
- Privacy Act 2020. You have rights of access and correction. Where we collect information about you from someone other than you, we tell you.
- Cash. We cannot accept NZD 10,000 or more in cash for jewellery, watches, precious metals or diamonds. This is a legal prohibition, not a policy we can waive.
- Complaints. To us first. You may also take a claim to the Disputes Tribunal within its limits, or to the Commerce Commission for Fair Trading Act matters.
If you buy for business rather than personal use, the Consumer Guarantees Act may be excluded. We tell you at checkout where that applies.
5.3 For transactions with Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited — Australia
Governed by New Zealand law, with Australian consumer protections applying to goods supplied to you in Australia.
The Australian Consumer Law gives you consumer guarantees for goods supplied into Australia. Nothing in our terms is intended to exclude, restrict or modify any guarantee that applies to you and cannot lawfully be excluded. You may be liable for Australian GST and duty on import — see section 4.
5.4 For transactions with Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited — European Union and United Kingdom
Governed by New Zealand law, with European and United Kingdom consumer protections applying to goods supplied to you there.
- You have 14 days to change your mind. EU and UK distance-selling rules give you 14 days from receiving the goods to withdraw from the purchase without giving a reason. You bear the direct cost of return. We refund you, including standard outbound delivery, within 14 days of receiving the goods back or proof that you have sent them.
- This does not apply to goods made to your specification or clearly personalised — a bespoke ring made to your design, an engraved piece, or a stone sourced to your brief. Where that exclusion applies we tell you before you pay.
- You also have a legal guarantee of conformity — goods must match their description and be fit for purpose — which is separate from and additional to anything we offer.
- Your data rights under the GDPR and UK GDPR are set out in our Privacy Notice, including the right to complain to your supervisory authority.
5.5 For transactions with Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited — Pacific Islands, Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Middle East
Governed by New Zealand law.
That does not take away rights your own country gives you. Many countries give consumers rights that apply whatever a supplier’s terms say — a cooling-off period on distance sales, a statutory guarantee of quality, or a right to a local complaints body. Where such a right applies to you, it applies, and we honour it.
In practice: our Warranty and Care and Returns Policy apply to you in full; you may return an item from anywhere we ship to, at your cost, subject to the exclusions for made-to-order and personalised pieces; you come to us first with a complaint and may then approach any consumer body in your country with jurisdiction over a supplier selling into it; and our Privacy Notice applies to you wherever you are.
6. Currency
Where we charge you in a currency that is not your own, your bank or card issuer sets the exchange rate and may add a conversion fee. That rate and fee are theirs, not ours.
Refunds are made in the currency you paid in. If the exchange rate has moved between your payment and your refund, the amount in your own currency may differ from what you originally paid. That is the rate, not a deduction by us.
7. Credit, instalments and lay-by
Neither company lends money or provides credit.
For transactions with Ralph Jacobs SA (Pty) Ltd, lay-by is available in South Africa under section 62 of the Consumer Protection Act, on stock items only — a finished piece we already hold. It is not available on a piece made to your specification, because a lay-by works by setting aside an item that exists, and a made-to-order piece does not. Buy-now-pay-later options from independent third-party providers may appear at checkout. See Payments and Verification.
For transactions with Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited, any instalment option shown at checkout is provided by an independent third-party credit provider licensed in your country, and your agreement for that credit is with them. Lay-by as described on our Payments page is a South African arrangement and is not offered outside South Africa.
If no such option appears at your checkout, none is available to you.
8. Second-hand jewellery and trade-ins
For transactions with Ralph Jacobs SA (Pty) Ltd only. Where we buy jewellery from you or take an item in trade, South African law requires us to record the transaction, verify your identity and confirm your right to sell. We may decline where we cannot establish that you own the item.
We do not buy second-hand jewellery or accept trade-ins outside South Africa.
9. Which version applies to you
The version of this page and of our other legal documents that applies to your purchase is the version published when you placed your order. Every version, with the dates it applied, is at ralphjacobs.org/versions/.
