1. In short
Complimentary 60-day ring resize labour benefit. If your ring needs resizing within 60 days of delivery or collection, we cover our standard resize labour on one eligible resize.
It is a labour benefit, not free resizing. Courier and insurance, extra metal, replating, stone work and engraving changes are not included, and some rings cannot safely be resized at all. Sections 4 to 6 set out exactly what is and is not covered, and we tell you the cost of anything outside the benefit before we start.
2. Purpose
This Policy explains the limited labour benefit for eligible ring resizing after delivery or collection.
If you are buying from outside South Africa, read this together with Where We Sell and Who You Buy From. The benefit is a discretionary Ralph Jacobs benefit and does not replace mandatory consumer-law remedies.
3. Eligibility
The benefit applies only where:
- the item is an eligible Ralph Jacobs ring;
- the request is made within 60 calendar days after delivery or collection;
- the ring can safely be resized;
- the requested size change is within the eligible range confirmed by Ralph Jacobs;
- the customer follows the RAN and return process; and
- no exclusion applies.
4. What is included
The benefit covers Ralph Jacobs’ standard resize labour for one eligible resize within the benefit period.
5. What is not included
The benefit does not include, unless Ralph Jacobs expressly states otherwise:
- courier, collection, delivery or insurance costs;
- additional metal;
- plating, rhodium or finishing where separately required;
- stone resetting or replacement;
- structural redesign;
- engraving changes;
- cleaning, repair or restoration not part of the resize labour;
- admin or assessment fees disclosed before acceptance;
- third-party jeweller costs; or
- work made necessary by damage, misuse, third-party work or incorrect customer information.
5A. What resizing does to a ring
A new Ralph Jacobs ring has no joins. It is cast in one piece, in the size you ordered. Resizing changes that, and we ask you to accept it in writing before we start.
How a ring is resized. To make a ring smaller, the jeweller cuts a small section out of the band and solders the ends together. To make it larger, the band is cut and a piece of matching metal is soldered in, or, where it is safe, the band is stretched a little. After resizing, the ring has a soldered join, usually at the base of the band. The solder is not the same metal as the ring. It must melt at a lower temperature so that the ring itself does not melt, so it has a different make-up, may be of a lower fineness than the ring, and can contain other metals. That is one reason the join can differ slightly in colour. The heat of resizing can also expose tiny pores that were under the surface of the cast metal, and can cause small pits in the joint area. That is a normal effect of the work, not a sign that the ring was badly made (see Warranty and Care section 4, “Porosity in cast metal”). Any metal added to make a ring larger is matched to the ring as closely as we can.
What you may see at the join. We finish and polish the join, but you may still see:
- a faint line where the band was joined;
- a slight difference in colour between the solder or added metal and the band. It shows most on rose and yellow gold, and on white gold once the rhodium plating wears; and
- some discolouration around the join.
These are the normal result of resizing, and they are not a defect.
What the join means for the ring. A well-made join is strong. But it is the part of the band most exposed to stress, and every further resize adds heat and another join. Stones close to the join may need to be tightened, and white gold is re-plated after resizing. Some rings cannot be resized safely at all (section 6).
Your rights on the work. Our resizing is covered by the guarantee the law gives on workshop work. For Ralph Jacobs SA (Pty) Ltd, that is three months on parts and labour (Consumer Protection Act section 57). For Ralph Jacobs NZ Limited, the work must be done with reasonable care and skill. A join that cracks or opens because the work was faulty is ours to put right. A visible line or a colour difference at the join is not.
6. Exclusions
Some rings cannot safely be resized or cannot be resized under this benefit, including full eternity bands, tension settings, engraved full-circumference bands, rings with delicate stones, unusual metals, heavily worn rings, rings with structural risk, and rings altered by third parties.
7. Statutory rights
This benefit is separate from statutory warranty rights. If the ring is defective or materially non-conforming, the Warranty and Returns policies apply.
A resize is repair work, so it carries the statutory warranty. For transactions with Ralph Jacobs SA (Pty) Ltd, section 57 of the Consumer Protection Act warrants the parts and the labour of a resize for three months from the date we do it. That is separate from, and longer than, the 60-day window for claiming this benefit — the 60 days is about when you may ask for a complimentary resize, not about how long the work is guaranteed. See Warranty and Care section 8A.
